Church is people, not buildings or meetings

To many people, ‘church’ means a particular building or place. To others it just refers to what people do on a Sunday. The Bible’s view is much bigger. Church is people, not buildings or meetings. It’s about who we are first, not what we do. The church is the community of people who have come to know God the Father’s love for us. We have been brought back into his family through the death of his son, Jesus Christ, in our place. We are each united to Jesus by the Holy Spirit, and will one day be all together with Jesus forever.

We’ve been brought into a relationship with God

So because we’ve been brought into a relationship with God, we’ve also been drawn into a deeper relationship with one another at the same time. It’s because church is about who we are that it is also about what we do. Because we have been shown such grace and steadfast love by God, we have an opportunity as his people to live that out practically and daily in love for others. God made us for a purpose. We are a people who look outwards, seeking to live out what we’ve received.

God wants to make us a blessing to others

In the Bible, whenever God calls a person or a family to himself, he not only blesses them but wants to make them a blessing to others (Genesis 12.1-3). The church then is God’s means of carrying out his mission to the world, to bring many more sons and daughters into his family, and to live out the reality that every square inch of creation is under Jesus’ lordship. So God doesn’t merely have a mission for his church. He has a church for his mission.
